I read the thought provoking article by Jason L. Frand: The information-age mindset: changes in students and implications for Higher education.
One of the concepts the article covers is "The information-Age Mindset" and explains the Gen-Y attitude to the use of technology in regards to Higher Education.
From my own experience, I can identify with the writer's comments in that I have definately experienced a shift in the way students demand the way in which the library deliver it's services...particulary in regard to "Zero tolerance for delays"!
This is particularly significant where students are more likely to approach their research by "Googling" and are less prepared to go through an old skool process of organising, constructing searches and evaluating search results for scholarly authority. I agree with Frand in that a balanced approach to research is required. A little bit of "trial and error" and a little bit of a "didactic" approach.
One of the great chanllenges I face on the information desk, is imparting the concept of this balance to Gen-Y students.
